Does an INCOME TAX exemption IS MUST 2022-2023

Insurers are seeking various tax exemptions from the central government in the Union Budget 2022-2023 to encourage Indians to buy more net risk products.

Traditionally, tax exemptions have acted as a catalyst for people to buy insurance products. But given the uncertainty associated with the pandemic, there is an organic demand for insurance products, especially net-risk and guaranteed income products.

However, the insurance industry still wants the government to continue with the tax exemption so that enough people get insurance coverage. India remains a very low penetration market when it comes to insurance.

According to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) annual report for 2020, insurance penetration in India is 4.20 percent by 2020-21, life insurance penetration is 3.20 percent and non-life 1 percent.

At present, under section 80C of the Income Tax Act, a person can claim a deduction of the life insurance premium paid from his taxable income. The deduction is limited to 10 percent of the minimum capital sum assured or premium paid, whichever is less.

In addition, an aggregate deduction of Rs 150,000 can be claimed under 80C.

Similarly, for premiums paid for health insurance plans are taken for self, spouse, dependent children, a deduction of Rs 25,000 can be claimed under section Rs. An additional deduction of Rs 25,000 can be claimed under the same section if the individual is also paying a premium for health plans covering the parents.
